A bit about Costa Rican Tarrazu coffee
The Tarrazú region, nestled in Costa Rica's interior mountains about 70 kilometers south of San José, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest coffee. This area, often referred to as "Los Santos" due to its districts named after saints, encompasses the cantons of Tarrazú, Dota, and León Cortés.
Coffee cultivation in Tarrazú began in the mid-19th century and quickly became the region's main economic activity. The area's high altitudes, ranging from 1,200 to 1,900 meters, combined with fertile volcanic soil and a favorable climate, create ideal conditions for growing high-quality Arabica beans.
Tarrazú's coffee is celebrated for its bright acidity, medium to full body, and complex aroma, often featuring notes of chocolate, citrus, and tropical fruits. The meticulous cultivation process, including hand-picking ripe cherries and careful processing, further enhances the beans' exceptional flavor profile.
The region's commitment to quality has earned its coffee international acclaim, with the "Café de Tarrazú" designation recognized as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This distinction underscores the unique characteristics and superior quality that define Tarrazú coffee.
